The Jacket I Wear in the Snow is a great book to use during a winter theme. Perhaps your winter theme may occur during a larger theme known as cycles, where you discuss day/night, seasons, and various other things of like nature. This book is the story of a little character who has to get dressed to head out in the snow. Picture cues throughout the book enhance quick vocabulary development/recall while reading through this story with the child/children.

Language
- sequencing events (putting clothing on)
- actual verbs of putting on clothing
- clothing (object function)
- I would use the different clothing items to compare same/different, or even have a child sort summer clothes vs winter clothes ( or hot things vs cold things)
- Scavenger Hunts for clothes to place on a felt doll, velcro creation, or on oneself is a lot of fun too (children love it)
- things outside in winter vs things inside
-this book leaves lots of room for categorizing
For OLDER KIDS - you could have them describe a jacket they have (or wish they could create). They can write out their descriptions, then with craft supplies you could 'decorate' a cloth sweatshirt (this could take a few days as part of a two day plan), a paper jacket, or a felt jacket for a paper/felt doll. Providing 'cool' stickers of things they like is an incentive to get lots of participation. The earlier language activities can be modified for more complex learning strategies.

Articulation
- This book is filled with various words (and word combos)
jacket, boots, hat, scarf, mittens/gloves (whatever you need them to be), socks, long underwear (sometimes underpants), hat, sweater, pants
- other supplementary words are things like:
snow, cold, ice, put, on, 'put on', head, (various body parts where the items are worn, ie feet, hands, neck, chest, legs)
