Monster Mischief  by Pamela Jane is a fun, rhyming book for the 'Halloween' season and it can be used for some good language-based skills teaching.

Another supplemental book along this line would be Five Ugly Monsters by Tedd Arnold (which follows the same theme as Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed)

Language

Sequencing the events ( I actually purchased the tiny plastic critters and tried to make the soup)

You can have them 'make' something to eat and tell you the steps involved in making it (or follow directions by completing a simple recipe step by step)

Labeling of the animals (frog, spider, lizard, bat)

Opposites such as big/little, empty/full, on/off, in/out

Same verses different (between what they were going to eat and what they end of actually eating)

Categorizing, things we eat verses things we don't eat

Building vocabulary

Articulation

This book is filled with plosives, blends, and final consonants.  Bilabial sounds are in abundance, with words such as 'monster, mixed, pumpkin, make, yummy, bat, mess, Moe' and more.

You could create your own stew using only items with sounds you want the child to practice saying (thus getting a lot of repetitions and still have lots of fun)
