DGWS Research Reports: Women in Sports.  American Association for Health, Physical Education, and Recreation. Washington, D.C.:  NEA Publication, 1971.

RC 1235.A47

This book presents research on topics of women in sports. The topics covered are kinds of sports, how a woman in sports has impacted society and how competitive sports for women developed. This book has many aspects of women in sports such as the Physiological, Psychosocial, Teaching and Coaching. An example of one of the sections is Research that was done both sexes to see the differences of sports. The researchers who studied about sports only studied on men. Now, they research in sports about women. Cabeza found that both women and men have different skills. Men are better at speed and coordination. Women have better balance compared to men in sports. The writing is directed toward all individuals involved with physical activity programs for girls and women. Even though the book results are published, many of those in a position to use them fail to apply the newly acquired knowledge because they do not understand the implications or are unfamiliar with research terminology. Some do not subscribe to or read research journals. This book can be useful if I want to be a coach. How do I do this? I can go to college and read a lot of this book, read information and train to be the coach. I will be able to make activities for their class better and will be better for women. They would teach you how to play sports. The book is interesting, fun and provides valid information and history. What if I want to know about women in sports and I don’t know anything about it? I can go to the library and find this book that has sports in it. Then I read and learn from it. This book can attract other people to sports. So, the author writes this book to give some more knowledge/awareness about women in sports.

A Biographical Dictionary of Women Artists in Europe and America Since 1850. New York: Harvest Wheatsheaf, 1990.

REF N 6757.D86

This dictionary is about women artists from America and Europe.  The entries are in alphabetical order by the name and the artist most frequently used.  The entries are fairly short and tell about the life of the artist and her work.  Some entries have pictures, and some do not.  In the middle of the book, there are about 16 pages of artwork, in color.  This book would be useful for anyone interested in learning about various women, their lives, and their art. The entries do not go into much detail, so this book would not be useful for anyone who was researching one specific artist.

American Nursing: A Biographical Dictionary. New York: Garland,

1988-1992. REF RT 34.A44

American Nursing: A Biographical Dictionary is a reference book designed to bring attention to the profession of nursing. Normally the accomplishments of women were not recognized. If they were in other biographies, there would be important data missing. The contributors working on this particular book wanted it to contain all of the key information. Therefore, they described what it took to be a nurse, what it was like to be a nurse, as well as the obstacles a nurse faced.  The format was designed to allow an individual writeup on each person's life. Before a woman's name could appear in this book, she must have been born before 1890 or be deceased.

Women’s Studies Encyclopedia. New York: Greenwood Press, 1989- 1991.

REF HQ 1115.W645

Volume III of the Women’s Studies Encyclopedia was published in 1989, and edited by Helen Tierncy. The book contains articles on topics in women’s history, philosophy, and religion. The articles would be of great help to anyone studying a period of time, a certain issue, or a place. The articles describe the women’s roles in the area or time period being discussed or the majority of women’s opinions on a particular issue. There is a helpful index in the back of the book, which can help narrow your search.

The content covered in this book is very broad. The articles tell about everything from women in Medieval times to the debate women have today over abortion. Many places are also covered in the book such as: Egypt, Africa, Cuba, Rome, Sweden, Britain, etc. Women’s roles in religion are discussed. If a person wanted to study a well-known religion like Christianity or even an unfamiliar religion like the Shakers, he would be able to find the information that he needed in this encyclopedia.

The language and wording used are very easy to understand. I feel that it would be considered "easy reading" by most adults. There is also a list of references after almost every reading. This makes researching the topic even further much easier. I did worry somewhat about the year this book was published; it is eleven years old. The articles that I read did not seem "dated", but in using this book as a reference, the reader would definitely want to keep the publishing date in mind. The information in this encyclopedia is easy to find, read, and understand. Overall, I found the Women’s Studies Encyclopedia to be an excellent research tool.

Your Guide To Women's Health, November 1991

HE 20.4010/4:W84

The issue Your Guide to Women's Health is an FDA Consumer Special Report that is important to women, to their families, and to the Food and Drug Administration. This particular report dealt with a range of controversial questions of whether gender bias exists in drug testing, to telling women about the latest prevention, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.

The report also addressed women and nutrition, and eating disorders. Also included were issues concerning women of childbearing age: contraceptives, infertility, and the risk of birth defects from the assumption of the drug Accutane, and TSS (toxic shock syndrome) associated with the use of tampons. Issues addressing older women are menopause and osteoporosis.

The information would be beneficial to women, their families, as well as, any agency or research that wants to review reports that were completed by the FDA.

The goal of the report was to raise the public's awareness of special problems that affect women's health and how to address these problems.

Indexes

Library Databases

(Infotrac SearchBank, National Newspaper Index, Business Index, etc.)

Library databases provide excellent information on more current pieces of work that can be found in periodicals, magazines, newspapers, and scholarly journals.  The library databases can be found on the internet at the site of the libraries of ETSU (http://sherrod.etsu.edu/) and can be accessed anywhere on campus or at your home computer (provided you have a valid ETSU id).  Once on the site, if you click on the word “general” it will take you to Infotrac.  This program allows you to search magazines and other sources for current information.  Infotrac has several sub-categories tailored to specific needs.  For example, if you are looking for the most current information on HMO’s, you might click on the health reference center icon.  To search for items, all you need is a keyword.  You can also narrow your search by publication, date, or even phrase.  Sometimes, you can find the entire article on Infotrac and sometimes only abstracts.  But the program does provide enough information to find the magazine in the library.  These databases are the best way to find the most current information on every subject imaginable and are very easy to use.

WWWomen

WWWomen (www.wwwomen.com) is an excellent web site for women no matter what their interest.  There is everything from art/entertainment to women in history and anything you could imagine in between!  I explored the feminism link and the women in history link.  Both links were absolutely fascinating!  I spent more time than I had intended to at this web site. The information I obtained was scholarly in content and seemed to be thoroughly researched.  In addition to scholarly subjects there were sites of interest for women in other aspects of life such as cooking and home entertaining.  I would definitely add this to my favorites list of useful sites.

For example all of the magazine links are together. It also has the major links on the side of the page together so that it is very noticeable for the person viewing.
