East Tennessee State University is a large
regional university located in the state's far northeastern corner, the
heart of
Appalachia. The university offers nearly 200 undergraduate,
graduate, and medical programs of study. The broader region around ETSU
is known as the Tri-Cities,
an amalgamation of the cities of Kingsport, Johnson City
(population 55,469 in 2008) and Bristol. The states of North Carolina
and Virginia lie but a few tens of miles from ETSU. The topography around the Tri-Cities is dominated by gently to steeply rolling hills and elongated valleys and ridges in the eastern Valley and Ridge physiographic province. Locally, this province is dominated by a fold and thrust belt in early Paleozoic (450-550 Ma Ordovician-Cambrian) marine sedimentary rocks (limestone, dolomites and shales). The region thus has a well developed karst terrain with abundant caves. East of these lowlands (elevation about 500 m), lies the beautiful Unaka Mountains with peaks well over 1900m. The Unakas are part of the Blue Ridge Mountains physiographic province in the southern Appalachian Mountains. Regional Facts. |
