The Laboratory of Rural Psychological and Physical Health (LRPPH) is based in the Department of Psychology at East Tennessee State University, and is an interdisciplinary and collaborative group of researchers, clinicians and students investigating associations between mental and physical health.

Mind-Body Relationships - The Link between Mental and Physical Health:

The Laboratory of Rural Psychological and Physical Health investigates the impact of cognitive and emotional characteristics on general health, chronic medical problems and course of and recovery from disease. Conversely, the LRPPH is concerned with the effect of physical health and illness on psychological well-being.

Positive Psychology and Mental and Physical Health:

Research conducted by the LRPPH strives to understand the relationship between positive psychological characteristics, such as positive emotions, future-oriented thoughts, important intergenerational relationships, and successful goal setting and attainment, and improved mental and physical health and well-being.

Rural Suicide and Prevention:

Rural areas may have unique characteristics that increase risk for suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Suicide rates are often higher in rural than urban areas. The LRPPH is currently investigating factors influencing risk for and protection from suicidal behavior, in the Appalachian region.
