August 2002 – present

    Assistant Professor. Department of Human Development and Learning, East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, Tennessee. Taught adolescent psychology, advanced adolescent psychology, child and adolescent development for educators, research methods, developmental psychology and child psychology classes.

 

August 2000 July 2002

    Instructor.  Department of Human Development and Family Studies, Auburn University.  Sole responsibility for a lifespan development course (100-150 students per section, 1-2 sections per semester). Course topics included physical, cognitive, and social development across the lifespan. 

 

September 2001 - November 2001

    Program Facilitator.  Department of Human Development and Family Studies, Auburn University. Served as a facilitator for a youth intervention program for middle adolescents. Taught personal skills such as communication, setting goals, teamwork, and problem solving to adolescents in a high school classroom setting. 

 

      June 2000 - August 2000

    Instructor.  Department of Human Development and Family Studies, Auburn University.  Sole responsibility for an undergraduate family and child development class.  Course topics included child development, family functioning, families in the environment, and family economics. 

 

January 2000 - June 2000

    Instructor. Department of Human Development and Family Studies, Auburn University.  Sole responsibility for an advanced undergraduate course on early and middle childhood development. Course topics included infant and toddler development, attachment theory, temperament theory, and health issues such as ADHD and nutritional needs.  Also supervised students’ observations of children in a laboratory setting and their preparation of research papers. 

 

September 1997 - December 1999

      Research Assistant.  Department of Human Development and Family Studies, Auburn University.  Assisted in all phases of a federally funded (National Science Foundation) study of social competence in preschool-age children.  Supervised undergraduate and graduate research assistants in data collection and coding of observational data.  Additional duties included performing statistical data analyses including correlational analysis, exploratory factor analysis, Multivariate Analyses of CoVariance (MANCOVA), Analysis of CoVariance (ANCOVA), and canonical correlational analysis. 

 

  June 1999 - September 1999

      Graduate Assistant. Department of Human Development and Family Studies, Auburn University.  Assisted in writing teacher manuals to accompany the Principles of Parenting instructional video series.  This video series features advice from developmental scientists on a wide range of topics related to parenting of preschool children (e.g., discipline, getting children ready to learn, teaching young children social skills). The teacher manuals included an overview of each instructional video as well as parent activities and learning strategies for each of the topics.

       Graduate Teaching Assistant.  Department of Human Development and Family Studies, Auburn University.  Lectured, administered exams and graded papers in an advanced undergraduate course on early and middle childhood development.

      Graduate Teaching Assistant.  Department of Human Development and Family Studies, Auburn University.  Lectured and graded exams in an advanced undergraduate child development class.  Also supervised students’ observations of children in a laboratory setting.                                                                                                                                                                                   

May 1996 - August 1997

      Family Life Educator (Full-Time).  Hiwassee Mental Health Center, Cleveland, TN.  Coordinated intervention strategies with families, adolescents, juvenile courts, and social service agencies in order to prevent placement of at-risk children into state custody.  Responsibilities included counseling families, teaching parenting skills and behavioral management skills, linking families with community services, as well as being on call to the families. 

 

December 1994 - May 1996

      Case Manager (Full-Time). Fortwood Mental Health Center, Chattanooga, TN.  Coordinated intervention strategies with families, mentally ill patients, court systems, and social service agencies in order to prevent the chronic hospitalization of severely mentally ill adults.  Duties included mental health counseling, medication monitoring, and assisting in obtaining community services and resources.
