Evidence-Based Fact Sheet
Incorporating Nursing Research into Nursing Practice

Why incorporate nursing research into your nursing practice? Evidence-Based Practice(EBP)
●The development of and utilization of nursing ●Nursing research that uses research
knowledge is essential for continued improvement findings as a basis for nurses’
in patient care decisions, actions and interactions
●Nurses need to base specific nursing actions with patients
decisions on evidence that indicates the actions are: ●Four steps of EBP
○Appropriate ○Clearly identify the problem
○Cost effective based on nursing knowledge
○Result in positive patient outcomes and practice
●Nurses who incorporate research in their practice ○Relevant literature search
are being professionally accountable to their patients ○Evaluate/critique the research
●Using research in a nurse’s practice reinforces the identity ○Choose interventions based
of the nursing as a profession on valid evidence
How are nurses involved in research? Research activities that a nurse can
●Indirectly participate in
○Consumers of research such as reading nursing ●Journal club/or subscribing and reading research reports to keep up to date on their practice journals
●Directly ●Attend research presentations/conferences
○Producers of research that actively participate in ●Evaluate completed research for its
a variety of research-related activities possible use in practice
●Assist in the collection of research
(i.e., hand out questionnaires)
●Incorporate research into your practice
such as evidence-based practice
