Books I Live/Garden By

Judy Lowe, Tennessee and Kentucky Gardener's Guide.
Color pictures, nice categorization (e.g., annuals, bulbs, etc.), and listings according to common name (e.g., Marigolds not tagetes) makes this my first choice every time. The entries could be longer and she does not cover everything you can find/grow in Tennessee. She has, however, given knowledgeable advice exceeding my nursery on more than one occasion.

Judy Lowe, Month-by-Month Gardening in Tennessee and Kentucky.
Also very useful, this volume helps you through the care and feeding of your garden and yard friends. Handy illustrations and insets guide you through basic gardening tasks.

Margie Hunter, Gardening with the Native Plants of Tennessee.
A gift from my friend, Kelly, who swears by this book. Nice photos and good descriptions. A very nice book, indeed.

Online Resources

University of Tennessee Extension Service
http://www.utextension.utk.edu/publications/homeGarden/default.asp
A must use link for any gardener in this region. Information on plants, vegetables, trees, laws, etc. Great stuff.

Dave's Plant Files
http://davesgarden.com/pf/
I don't know him, but I love his website. Look up the details and even some pictures on the plant, tree, etc. of your choice.

HGTV's Garden Website
http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/gardening/
It's an uber-commercial site, but it does have great resources. You can also go here to find out more about the shows discussed below. If you do not/cannot watch HGTV, this is the next best thing, if not better.

All About Lawns
http://www.allaboutlawns.com/
A great resource on all things lawn. Their articles are quite sufficient, though not totally comprehensive. A great find for the green carpet!

Heat Zone Map
https://www.ahs.org/publications/heat_zone_map.htm
Where the USDA has its maps of hardiness zones (measuring tolerable cold), the American Horticultural Society has a heat map to consider whether or not your plants will survive summer.

Google Image Search
http://www.google.com/imghp?hl=en&tab=wi&q=
Why include an image search engine in my list? Because this is a great way to find out what a prospective member of your garden and/or yard should look like.

TV Shows I Watch for Ideas, Instruction, and Inspiration (all on HGTV)

Gardening by the Yard
Yes, Paul James is goofy, but he has a great attitude about working in the yard only matched by his knowledge and clear explanations.

Landscape Smart
A show that tries to present projects that are reasonable in task and finance for most homeowners.

Curb Appeal
Yes, they spend way more than I can, but it helps you understand design better.
