I'll Be Here

Amy's going out tonight,

Says she's needing some time alone;

I can see her moving in slow motion

Underneath the downtown lights.

I've heard it in her veiled sighs—

Echoes of a distance coming on—

And I've prayed that I could find the answers

To the question in her eyes.

She's never given any reason for me to doubt her love,

But something's going on that she's got to work out on her own.

I'll be here when she's ready to come home—

I'll be here 'cause she'll need a friend—

I'll be here to help her through these hard times—

I'll be here when she's ready to love me again.

Can't imagine how our love

Could be something she settled for;

Can't imagine how our reach could fall so short

Of what we dreamed of.

If she's feeling out some new plan

Or searching her past for an open door,

Well, I pray it doesn't slip away,

Leaving broken hearts and empty hands.

I've never given any reason for her to doubt my love;

I hope tonight that what she finds is I'm the one she's looking for.

I'll be here when she's ready to come home—

I'll be here 'cause she'll need a friend—

I'll be here to help her through these hard times—

I'll be here when she's ready to love me again.

Love gets lost in the deep dark woods of the day-to-day.

We've got to balance the cost of the rescue

against the turning and walking away

I'll be here when she's ready to come home—

I'll be here 'cause she'll need a friend—

I'll be here to help her through these hard times—

I'll be here when she's ready to love me again.
