GETTING READY FOR THE FINAL EXAM
ETSU COURSE NAME AND CODE HERE...
Step One (students only... DO NOT COMPLETE THIS STEP
PRIOR TO WEEK 11 OF CLASS!!!): After reading the final exam
rules,
below, and if we have reached week 11 or later of classes (starting March 29th,
2004), send the
instructor (currie@mail.etsu.edu) an
e-mail suggesting the name and location of a possible proctor (the subject
should be, "FINAL EXAM"). Your e-mail must
include the proposed proctor's title, workplace and work e-mail address (if you provide their home
e-mail address also, it may be easier to get in touch with them more quickly... but
you
must provide their work e-mail address). Proctors may not be immediate
family members as described on the class policies page. Class
participants must submit proposed proctor information prior to midnight of
Wednesday, April 21st, or take the exam at the East Tennessee State University
campus in Johnson City, TN (see below). If the proctor and exam site you
suggest are approved, we (ETSU) will get in touch with your proposed proctor and
provide them with necessary information.
Step Two (students and proctors): Read the final exam rules below.
The rules posted on this page supercede any rules posted anywhere else; if you
find any information anywhere else and it does not agree with what you find on
this page, ignore the other page . Additional rules may be added if any
correspondence indicates that the current rules (as posted on this page and only
this page) are unclear or that additional rules are required.
- the final exam must be completed within
the allowed time frame, but at a time deemed suitable by your ETSU-approved
proctor (the exam must be completed between 9 am,
Saturday, April 24th and midnight of Tuesday,
April 27th - the exam may be started as late as 9 pm on April 27th, but
no later - students must verify an exam time with their approved proctor).
- once your proposed exam location and
proctor have been approved, and they have agreed to serve as proctor, it is
incumbent upon the student to contact the proctor to arrange a suitable time
for the exam
- the final on-line exam must be completed at a site
approved by the instructor (see above).
- identification of the student must be
verified at the time of the exam by an approved proctor.
- proctors must be
persons in verifiable management level positions, and in a higher position
than that held by the examinee.
- the proctor must have their own e-mail
address at the intended exam site.
- suitable exam sites, which
may or may not be approved by the instructor, include college or other school computer labs, networked computers in
public libraries, community centers or workplaces such as hospitals, police and fire
stations, EMT stations, government offices, military/reserve bases, naval
ships, church offices (eg. a hospital employee might be allowed to complete the on-line exam in the workplace, with permission of their manager or
employer).
- the final exam is 3 hours in duration; exams submitted more
than 3 hours after they are initially accessed will not be accepted (there is no
grace period; with 50 students per semester, a huge amount of time is
invested confirming exam locations and proctor status); proctors
should carefully keep track of time spent on the exam.
- participants who do not propose a suitable
exam site and possible proctor will not be allowed to take the exam.
- students residing in Johnson City may take
the exam in room 236 of Lamb Hall between 9 am and 6 pm on Monday, April 26th or Tuesday,
April 27th; the instructor will proctor exams in room 236
of Lamb Hall
- The final exam must be accessed, completed and
submitted from the approved exam site and the site will be verified
electronically by IP address at the time of access and submission. The final exam
must NOT be completed from
the home of a student or proctor (unless pre-approved by the instructor for
medical or other specific acceptable reasons).
- examinees must not communicate with
anyone regarding the exam, other than the proctor (or instructor or other ETSU
designate), either verbally, electronically or otherwise,
during the exam.
- the exam must be completed independently.
- examinees must not discuss the curricular content
of the exam with colleagues from class, either verbally, electronically, or
otherwise, until after the final deadline for completion of the exam (ie.
after midnight of Tuesday, April 27th); general comments regarding the exam,
such as the following, are fine... eg. it is a tough exam, it is truly a
comprehensive exam, study a lot for the exam, be sure to take a calculator to
the exam, I think I did really well on the exam, it only took me 2 hours to
finish, etc.
- if technical problems arise such that you are
unable to access the on-line exam, notify your proctor at the exam site and get them to e-mail the
instructor so that the time limit for the exam may be extended if required.
- the final exam covers the entire semester. It is a closed book final although you
are free to browse the Internet (including the
course web site)... as the
exam is a comprehensive concepts exam, browsing ABSOLUTELY DOES NOT help those who have not studied,
but may be an aid to those who wish to occasionally clarify their thinking.
- you may NOT remove a printed copy of the final exam
from the exam site... if the exam is printed during the examination period,
the copy must be destroyed by the student or proctor before the student
leaves the site of the final exam.
- students may use a traditional hand held calculator or
the calculator provided in the accessories folder of the computer operating
system.
- students may not have any printed or hand written notes,
assignments
or quizzes with them during the exam and they may not print any notes other
than the exam (which must be destroyed at the conclusion of the exam
period); if you opt to take the exam in room 236 of Lamb Hall at the ETSU
Johnson City campus, printers will not be available.
- students may have blank paper for rough work, or calculations
during the exam.
- it is recommended that students who may wish to browse during the exam
open 2 copies of the browser during the exam (using one for browsing if
necessary, and the other for the exam).
- it is recommended that you "save"
frequently during the exam, or write down a few words to help you
remember which answer you have chosen for each question in the event that
there is a power failure, or you accidentally close the browser window in
which you are completing the final exam.
Step Three: If you are a student, or a proctor,
and it is after March 29th, 2004, and you have read the final exam
regulations above, and agree to follow the regulations and/or to serve as a
proctor, please send an e-mail using the link immediately below to indicate that
you have reviewed the exam regulations... be sure to sign the e-mail with your
name...

Step Four: Once your proposed site and proctor
have been approved, and the instructor has contacted the proctor, and your
proctor has indicated that they will serve as a proctor, you will be given
access to the final exam through the FINAL EXAMP GROUP on the main class
page. Those with approved proctors will be able to access the final exam
through a link provided in the final exam group discussion board.
