What do you do in Copyediting class?
Copyediting coursework includes MUCH more than editing copy!
1) It begins with a review
of AP style, grammar, punctuation and writing good leads.
2) Then we'll take it a step further
by studying and implementing the particular things editors have to watch
for as good editors of text:
- Death, medical, disasters
- Numbers and percentages
- Libel and other legal issues
- Fact checking and other holes
- Sensitivity & taste
3) Once text editing skills have
been honed, we'll move on to
writing headlines.
We'll talk about:
- Mixing typefaces
- Styles of headlines
- Rules of headlines
- Making heads fit
- Writing cutlines & captions
4) Finally, before the semester
ends, we'll put text editing and headline
writing together with writing captions and
copyblocks, so each student should be able
to edit an entire newspaper, newsletter or magazine page
when they leave class.
