The first Fall 2023 meeting was held on Friday, September 15 from 2:00 to 3:00 in Gilbreath Hall, room 313. Pizza was provided, funded by previous t-shirt sales. Dr. Bob gave a persentation on "Integral Domains and Fields of Quotients," a talk that extended an integral domain to a field by defining addition and multiplication on equivalence classes of ordered pairs of elements of the integral domain. A Zoom recording of the presention is available online here. New members of the club were welcomed and membership cards given out. Club t-shirt orders were taken and the design on the shirt (given below) were briefly discussed. A second talk in October will give more specific details on the topic of the design.
The second Fall 2023 meeting was held on Friday, October 20 from 2:00 to 300 in Gilbreath Hall, room 313. Pizza was provided, funded by the sale of t-shirts (and donations) during the Fall 2023 semester. The meeting was attended by 13 graduate students, 2 faculty, and 1 alumnus (through Zoom). Dr. Bob gave a presentation on "Numbers: The Reals and Beyond!", a talk that started with the field of real numbers and included a construction of the complex numbers from the reals, and proceeded beyond the complex numbers with the Cayley-Dickson construction to consider the quaternions, octonions, and sedenions. This talk covered the content of the club t-shirts for fall 2023. The talk is available online in PowerPoint. The group photo from the meeting is below.
