Anselm Kiefer.  Osiris and Isis. 1985-1987.  Diptych, mixed media on canvas, 12 feet, 6 inches x 18 feet, 4 1/2 inches x 6 1/2 inches.

Neoexpressionism uses realism to create paintings that are overtly socially critical.  The most highly regarded painter among Post-Modernists is German artist Anselm Kiefer (1945- ).  Kiefer has blazed new trails with his use of nontraditional painting materials, including dirt, tar, and copper threads.

In the painting above, Kiefer has appropriated the architecture and religion of Egypt, and blended these with contemporary materials, including an electronic keyboard. He gives expression to fears about modern technology, which has become like Isis, a god capable of restoring -- or destroying -- life.
