| A close-up view of a small fragment of the ger hanging shows the wonderful colors and Islamic-inspired motifs of Khazzakh hand-embroidery. This signed antique dates from 1972. Together, Theresa Markiw of the U.S. Embassy and I somehow managed to come home with 18 of these beautiful creations, each quite unique. The earliest one in my collection dates from 1963. Such artistic and utilitarian works can help to supplement the meager incomes of semi-nomadic herders, and give women an enhanced economic role within the family. | ![]() |
