Very thick embroidered mats of felt, called koshma, are placed on the ground for guests inside the Kazakh ger, and are used for a variety of seated activites out of doors. I purchased this brilliantly colored one from the ger of a woman in our camp near Ölgii during the Naadam festival. These mats seem mostly to be created with wools dyed in various shades of white, grey, brown, or black, and when colored are apparently usually quite subdued. This is far and away the most exceptional of the many that I have seen, whether in the art shops in Ulaanbaatar, or out here in the province where they are made.
