Chang JC et al.  What Happens When Health Care Providers Ask About Intimate Partner Violence? A Description of Consequences from the Perspectives of Female Survivors. Jol of the Amer Med Women's Assoc; 58, 2: 76 - 81.

Intimate partner violence is a significant issue in Women's Health.  This study used seven focus group interviews to examine the positive and negative consequences of health care screening for intimate partner violence (IPV) from the perspective of female survivors.  The positive consequences described were that the screening helped them realize the domestic violence was a problem, feeling less isolation, and feeling that the provider cared.  Negative consequences reported were: fear of being judged by the provider, feeling more anxiety about the unknown repercussions of revealing the abuse, feeling that the IPV protocol was too intrusive due to repeating it to many people, and feeling disappointment in the provider's lack of support.  the findings emphasize the importance of the attitude and manner of the provider in IPV screening and in finding ways to convey appropriate information and support after disclosure of domestic violence.

                       DID YOU KNOW?
  • In a Johns Hopkins University study, African American and Hispanic patients were less likely than whites to find antidepressant medication acceptable.

  • In an MCO where all enrollees had access to services, Black and Hispanic diabetics enrollees reported more health care visits than whites, but had significantly lower use of five of the eight preventive services.

  • Patient Navigation is a concept now being tested to determine if individualized guidance for patients and their families through the cancer care system can improve access to care, improve standards of care, and reduce cancer heath disparities.
