Article of the Month

Siminoff LA, Graham GC, Gordon NH.  Cancer communication patterns and the influence of patient characteristics: disparities in information-giving and affective behaviors.  Patient Educ Couns. 2006 Sept; 62 (3): 355-60 Epub 2006 July 24.

This study examined the initial consultation between oncologists and patients to determine which patient characteristics were associated with doctor-patient communication patterns.  Interviews were audio taped.  Both patients and physicians were interviewed before and after the encounter, and a communication analysis was made for each. Differences in communication patterns were found across all patient demographics: age, race, income, and education.  White patients had many more utterances in almost every communication category than their non-white counterparts.  Members of racial and ethnic minorities, less affluent patients, older patients and those with less education recorded less communication with the providers.   The implications for practice are that clinicians need training in communication skills to overcome these tendencies.
