              Did You Know?
◦     Suicide is more deadly for men, with 4 times more males completing suicide than females although females attempt suicide 3 times more often than do males.  In 2002, suicide rates were highest among Whites and  Native Americans. There are large variations among tribes.
◦    Many Hispanic cultures have a tradition of lay healers: senora/abuela, yerbero (herbalist), sobador (massage therapist, partera (midwife and healer for young children), and curadero total (lay healer using several kinds of traditional therapies).
◦     Prostate cancer death rates are declining for all racial and ethnic groups. However, death rates are highest for African American men: in Tennessee the annual age adjusted mortality rates are 74.8/100,000 for African-American men compared with 29.6 for Caucasians.  Asian and Pacific Islander men have the lowest prevalence and death rates for this disease.

Jacobs EA et al. Overcoming Language Barriers in Health Care: Costs and Benefits of Interpreter Services.  American Journal of Public Health 2004; 94 (5): 866—9.
Summary: The authors assessed the impact of interpreter services on the cost and utilization of  health care services among HMO patients with limited English proficiency (LEP) by measuring  the change in cost of care and delivery of services before and after implementation of interpreter services. The control group was a random sample of 10% of all other eligible members who had received care during the same year. Their findings were that LEP patients who used the interpreter services received significantly more recommended preventive services, made more office visits, and had more prescriptions written and filled compared with the control group. The annual cost of providing interpreter services was estimated at $279 per person per year.
