I. Overview of
both parts of the final exam
Your
final exam is worth 10% of the final grade.
It has 2 parts, each of which is worth 5 points:  1) the In-Class Part, and 2) the Take-Home Part.
For
the In-Class Part, you will write an essay in class, during the final exam
period -- 8-10am on Weds Dec 11 -- in which you describe what all you've
learned about your writing this semester.
For
the Take-Home Part, you will respond to 2 of your classmates' online essays, and
you will deliver a hard copy of each response to your respective classmates, in
addition to submitting a hard copy to me.
II. For the
Take-Home, select 2 classmates' essays, and write at least 300 words in
response to each
A.  By the afternoon of Weds Dec 4, your
classmates will have their best essays posted here:
              faculty.etsu.edu/odonnell/2019fall/engl1010/best_student_essays.htm
Browse
the titles there, and select 2 essays to which you will write a response.
B.  For each of your responses, follow these
guidelines:
  1. Write at least 300 words.
  2. Address the author of the work
directly.  Do not address me, the
teacher.
  3. Do not evaluate the essay. Instead,
respond to the essay, honestly, as a reader. Tell the author why you're reading
the essay. How did it make you feel?
What did it make you think? What additional things do you have to say
about the essay's topic.
III. Bring 2
clearly-labeled copies to the final exam meeting
Clearly
label each response. Then print out 2 copies. On one of those copies, hand
write the words "COPY 1, FOR [AUTHOR'S NAME]".  On the other, hand write the words "COPY
2, FOR THE INSTRUCTOR".
Bring
both copies to the final exam meeting at 8am on Weds Dec 11.
IV. Grading
criteria
I
will grade each essay holistically, according to the standard criteria for good
writing.  I will pay special attention to
how clearly each essay is labeled.
