Instructions for Saving Your Final Revision as a PDF and Submitting It

last update: Sunday December 1, 2019

I. Overview

Your final revision is due on Wednesday, December 4. Print out a hard copy and submit that to me in class. I will grade the hard copy, which counts as 20% of your final grade.

In addition, you must email me a PDF file, with key words embedded, suitable for posting on the web. Follow the instructions below.  Regardless of whether or not you choose to have your essay posted on the web, you must submit me an electronic version, before I will grade your printed copy.

Email the file to me by 11:20am on Weds Dec 4, to meet the deadline.

II. Include an email address

Type an email address clearly at the top of the essay, near the author's name.

III.  Brainstorm your key words

Before you save your document as a pdf file, brainstorm the half dozen or so most important key words -- or indexing terms, or "tags" -- for your article.  Write these terms in your notebook. These are the search terms that people will use to google your essay if it is posted on the web.

Key words typically include names of people and places.  For example, if Rimsha submits her essay about being the best womens golfer in Pakistan, her key words might be:  women, golf, Pakistan, Lahore, Rimsha, Iljaz, and maybe the name of the golf club in Pakistan, where she was based.

IV. Save as a PDF file, with your key words embedded

In MS word

1.   File > Save as

2.  In the drop-down that says "save as type", select "PDF" as your file type.

3.  Be sure the radio button that says "Optimize for: Standard (publishing online and printing)" is checked.

4.  In the box that says "Tags," type each of your key words -- or tags. Separate each word with a semi colon.

5.  In the "file name" box, type a file name that includes the most important key words, with each word separated by an underscore.

For example, Rimsha could name her file iljaz_womens_golf_pakistan.pdf

Embedding these key words in the actual file name optimizes the file for an internet search. In other words, whenever someone types those key words into google, Rimsha's file will be prioritized in the search results.
