In-Class Writing Activity:

Thinking about Your Writing Process

(O'Donnell, ETSU, First-year composition course materials)

1.  Think of a specific, successful writing task you've performed in the past.  It could be a particular email; a poem; an academic article.

2.  At the top of a page in your notebook, write the title (or a subject line, or a short description if you can't remember the title) and the approximate dates when you composed the piece in question.

3.  Describe your writing process:

  - What discrete steps did you take: what did you do first, what next, etc?

  - How long did it take?

  - Where were you, while you were composing it?  Name the setting.  What did you wear, eat, drink, etc?

  - What writing technologies did you use?
