I studied the effect of primary and secondary wastewater discharge on the microbial ecology of wetlands; included fate of indigenous bacteria, indicator bacteria, viruses, and bacteriophage. Studies on the formation of mutagenic compounds after discharge of chlorinated effluents.
RESEARCH: Public health microbiology, aquatic and soil microbial ecology and toxicology.
1. Effect of toxic pollutants on sediment microorganisms.
2. We are trying to understand and model biodegradation in soil and water using both in situ and inoculated microbial consortia.
3. Development of indicators to determine source of fecal pollution in surface water.
4. Development of PCR methods for detecting Giardia and Cryptosporidium in surface waters. Development of risk assessment models for exposure to Giardia and Cryptosporidium in surface waters.
5. Use of constructed wetlands for waste treatment.
6. We are developing new biological indicator tests for the presence of hazardous and toxic chemicals in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Application of bioindicator data to ecological risk assessment processes.
