THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION IN THE SOUTH

SPRING 2008 – DR. SCHMITT

OBJECTIVES

Sample a variety of topics in the history of the war in the south.

Closely examine some aspects of the southern revolutionary experience.

Conduct an individual research project in a topic concerning the Revolution in the South.

REQUIRED READING

                            Any of several standard textbooks on the American Revolution.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

1. Class Participation (20%)

Each week there will be a general discussion of the topic listed for the week. Each class member will be expected to participate.

2. Book Reviews (20%)

Five book reviews of 4-5 typed pages will be due during the semester. Spelling and grammar should be perfect. Plagiarism will not be tolerated. The due dates and specific assignments will be announced in class.

3. Short Presentations (20 %)

                    Four brief presentations will be required during the semester. Details will

                    be provided in class.

4. Research Project (40%)

An individual project equivalent to a 20 page research paper will by due by Apr 28. Topics must be approved in advance by the instructor. The SCHEDULE:

March 10 – Preliminary bibliographies due

April 21 – Give formal presentation to class

April 28 – Final written copy due to instructor

PRESENTATIONS

 

1. Oral presentations will be scheduled for each night beginning with the fourth week of the semester.

2. Presentations must be ten minutes or less.

3. Presentations can be accompanied by handouts, visual aids, powerpoint shows, etc.

4. Each student must make four presentations during the semester: one on each of the four categories:

            a. a major personality of the southern war

            b. a minor personality of the southern war

            c. a major historical site of the southern war

            d. a minor historical site of the southern war.

Guidelines for presentations on personalities:

        Each presentation should include at least the following:

            1. A brief summary of the person’s life,

            2. A description of printed sources available on the person,

            3. A discussion of internet sources available on the person,

            4. Some assessment of the person’s importance to the war in the south.

Guidelines for presentations on historic sites:

        Each presentation should include at least the following:

            1. A brief description of the site,

            2. A description of internet sources related to the site,

            3. An evaluation of the site from both the viewpoint of an historian and a casual visitor,

            4. An assessment of the value of the site.
