DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY

GRADUATE REQUIREMENTS

 

REQUIRED COURSES:

            5950: Introduction to Historical Research   (Students should take 5950 as early as possible)

            5940: Historiography

 

PRIMARY & SECONDARY FIELDS  (American, European, or World)

        A student will take a majority of courses in one of the above three fields.

           A student must take at least six hours, including at least one seminar, in one of the two areas other than the primary field.

 

SEMINAR REQUIREMENT  (70% RULE)

        At least 70% of all courses counted toward the degree must have been "graduate student only" courses, that is courses of

                    form 5xx0.

 

TRANSFER CREDIT (9 Hours Maximum)

            Transfer of credit is not automatic.  It must be petitioned for after completion of at least 9 hours of graduate credit at

                    ETSU and must be approved by the major advisor, department chair, registrar, and dean of the Graduate School.

 

NON-HISTORY CREDIT (10 Hours Maximum)

            In order to count toward a degree in History, courses taken outside the History Department must be graduate level

                    classes and must be approved by the student's advisory committee.

 

INDEPENDENT STUDIES (3 Hours Maximum)

            When a student needs to do reading, research, and writing in a topic that is not offered as a regular course, independent

                    study (HIST 5900) may be arranged with an individual faculty member.  Such courses should be approved by the

                    student's advisory committee.

 

TIME LIMIT: 6 YEARS

            The masters degree must be completed within six years of the date of the earliest course applied toward the degree.

 

DISMISSAL FROM PROGRAM

            To remain in good standing a student must maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 on all graduate work attempted.  If a student's

                    cumulative GPA falls below 3.0, he will be placed on academic probation the following semester.  If a 3.0

                    cumulative GPA is not achieved by the end of the probationary semester, he will be subject to dismissal from the

                    graduate program.  No student will be allowed more than two probationary semesters.

 

DECLARATION OF CANDIDACY

            After completion of 12 hours of graduate credit, students should apply to the Graduate School for admission to

                    candidacy.  At that time an advisory committee will be appointed for the student.  Candidacy papers MUST be filed

                    before the beginning of the student's final semester.  No student should enroll in Thesis before the filing of candidacy.

 

REQUIRED HOURS:  THESIS OPTION (30 Hours)

        HIST 5960: Thesis (3 hours credit) is included in the 30 hours.  Once a student has enrolled in Thesis he must remain

                    continuously enrolled in the graduate program until the degree is actually awarded.

 

COURSEWORK OPTION  (39 Hours)

            Students must declare a primary and secondary field of study.  The primary area must include a seminar in that field which

                    will include the completion of a major research paper; the secondary field shall include a minimum of nine credit

                    hours of study.  The department chair and graduate coordinator will nominate an advisory committee for each

                    student which will include two professors in the primary area and one in the secondary area.  During the student's

                    final semester of coursework, each student will take a comprehensive written examination set by the committee

                    over the primary and secondary areas of study which will be followed by a comprehensive oral examination.
