    Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Park

I am in the process of scanning the pictures and creating these pages, so be patient.....

Hluhluwe (pronounced shlew-shlew-ee) - Umfolozi Game Preserve
Declared in 1897, Hluhluwe-Umfolozi and Mkuzi are stupendous. Though they don't adjoin, a corridor allows animals to move freely between the reserves. The Umfolozi takes in a gigantic 118,000 acres ranging over floodplain and hill country. Hluhluwe is a respectable 57,000 acres and includes areas of misty mountain forest as well as bush and grasslands (see photos below). Mkuzi covers 86,450 acres of grassland and forest, as well as the wetlands of the Mkuzi River and the Nsumu Pan.
Hluhluwe-Umfolozi is loaded with wildlife, including as many as 1600 white rhinoceros. Of the big five (buffalo, elephant, lion, leopard, and black rhino), we saw 3.5 (we give the white rhino a score of 0.5 since it is the wrong species. ..but close enough to score) during our 1.5 day trip to the park. Imagine the luck one could have if they were there for 5 days!?  Nearby Mkuzi also offers some of the best -- and cleverest -- wildlife viewing in the country.

The following pictures are piled on haphazardly, but I am working on the organization.....

This picture was taken from a protected "hide" near a water hole. Note the ox-peckers on his nose and back (the next picture is a zoom done with the computer).

Our first taste of Rhino was this pair of white rhinoceros.

This picture makes me sleepy.

Ouch! That could hurt...

Pedestrian traffic

Look closely! Can you see the cheetah we saw on this misty morning?
Once you pick out his head, the rest will jump out at you.

Armed guards within the park (to keep poachers out and to defend the tourists if needed).
