St. Lucia Park & Game Reserve
Created around 1897, this is one of South Africa's oldest
reserves. The park includes St. Lucia lake (which is actually an estuary),
its islands and Mapelane, a popular fishing spot across the mouth of the
estuary. The waters are shallow and warm. The salinity varies, supporting
a wide variety of wildlife. Flamingoes, pelicans and fish eagles all breed
here. Also common are crocodiles and hippos.
