Challenge 3

Among friends, how can you be an influence for positive peer-pressure? Consider a one-two day analysis of a friend’s diet and physical fitness activities. How can you partner with them to support an improved diet or increased physical fitness activities? Or, can you suggest modifications to diet/fitness?

*This is a take-home activity, or if time permits, they can analyze someone in their group.*

Youth Screen Time

Every day, on average, 8-18 year olds spend:

● Nearly four hours watching TV, videos, DVDs, and prerecorded shows

● Just over one hour on the computer

● About 50 minutes playing video games

● 2/3 of young people have a TV in their bedroom

● 1/2 have a video-game player

● Nearly 1/3 have a computer in their bedroom

● Youth who have TVs in their rooms spend 1 ½ more hours a day watching TV than those without TVs in their rooms

● About half of all 8-18 year olds say their families have no rules about watching TV

● 46% of 8-18 year olds say they do have rules, but only 20% said the rules were enforced “most” of the time

● Youth with TV rules that were enforced most of the time report 2 hours less daily media exposure than in homes without rules that were enforced
