A Discussion of The Analysis

I viewed all three films looking for the enforcement of heterosexual norms upon the homosexual characters in the films.  I noticed common three common themes throughout each of the films

1.    The Representation of the masculine and the feminine

The Birdcage:

Even though both Albert and Armand are described as homosexual, one is feminine and the other is masculine.

Boat Trip:

Jerry and Nick are both heterosexual.  However, one is always acting feminine and the other masculine.  This suggests that even if characters are acting as though they are homosexual, heterosexual norms still have to be enforced.

My Best Friend’s  Wedding: George, Julianne’s best friend always represents the man in Julianne’s life.  Even though he is identified as homosexual, there is nothing besides that identification to indicate his sexuality.  His actions resemble Julianne’s boyfriend not homosexual friend.

2. Stereotypes Reinforced

The Birdcage:

Both Albert and Armand are by no means middle class.  They own a prosperous cabaret and live in a rather luxurious apartment in South Beach, FL.  In addition, they are both extremely well dressed and white.

Boat Trip:

The scene of the film is on a luxurious cruise liner. The homosexuals represented are white, well dressed, and seemingly educated.

My Best Friend’s Wedding:

George’s occupation is an editor of an unspecified food critic magazine, an arguably well-paying job.  In addition, he flies halfway across the country twice during the time span of four days.  I think most of us would agree that this is not feasible for the average joe.

3. Homosexuals are enablers for the heterosexual characters.

The Birdcage:

Albert and Armand are enablers to their son’s relationship.  Val needs them to act as though they are heterosexual for the sake of his relationship.

Boat Trip:

The homosexuals in this film enable Jerry’s relationship with Gabriella.  They break up the wedding with his ex-girlfriend and assist him in skydiving, in order to reach his heterosexual love, Gabriella.

My Best Friend’s Wedding:

George acts as though he is  Julianne’s fiancé in order to make Michael jealous.
