PROBABILITY AND STATISTICS - Summer 1998

COURSE: MATH 1080-051, CALL #21310

TIME: 11:20 - 12:50 MTWThF, PLACE: 304 Gilbreath

INSTRUCTOR: Dr. Robert Gardner, OFFICE: Gilbreath 308L and Brown 201

OFFICE HOUR: 2:00-3:00 MTWThF, PHONE: 439-6978 (Math Office 439-4349)

E-MAIL ADDRESS: gardnerr@etsu.edu

HOMEPAGE: www.etsu.edu/math/gardner/gardner.htm.

CLASS HOMEPAGE: A copy of the syllabus and class notes are available on the internet at: www.etsu.edu/math/gardner/1080/1080.htm

TEXT: The Basic Practice of Statistics, by David S. Moore, published by W, H. Freeman.

SUPPLEMENTARY TEXT: Study Guide for Moore's "The Basic Practice of Statistics", by William Notz and Rebecca Busam. A copy of this will be on reserve in the library.

CALCULATOR: A scientific calculator capable of statistical computations is required. The Sharp EL-546 (by Sharp Electronics) is available at the ETSU bookstore at a reduced price and I will give in class the keystrokes for several operations for this particular calculator.

PREREQUISITES: Two years of high school algebra. Those students not comfortable with the topics of 9th grade algebra (standard algebraic manipulations, graphing lines, etc.) will not be comfortable in this class. A "pretest" will be given the first day of class and students scoring less than 75% are STRONGLY encouraged to take (or retake) an introductory algebra class.

ABOUT YOUR RESPONSABILITY: Time is our enemy this summer! We need to cover 22 sections and have 3 tests in 25 class meetings. Please make every effort to keep up! Homework will be assigned daily (except on test days). This homework will not be collected, but will be covered (as requested and as time permits) in class. An understanding of the homework (as well as the lectures) will be vital for the tests.

GRADING: We will have two tests and a comprehensive final. Your average will be computed as follows: AVERAGE = (T1 + T2 + F)/3. Grades will be assigned based on a 10 point scale with "plus" and "minus" grades being assigned as appropriate. Test questions will be taken from a "testbank," several copies of which are on reserve in the library.

FINAL EXAMINATION: We will have a comprehensive final prepared by the Math Department. Students will be assigned a grade that does not deviate more than one letter grade from that earned on the final examination. For extremely low scores on the final, the student must be assigned a course grade of F. A sample final exam is on reserve in the library. Distribution of examination questions on the final exam are:

Chapter Percentage
1 25
2 15
3 20
4 10
5, 6, 7 30

MATH LAB: A Mathematics Laboratory has been established in Rooms 308 and 309 of Warf-Pickle Hall. It is staffed by very qualified students (most them also my students). Several of the graduate students working in the Math Lab have themselves taught MATH 1080. The hours are 11:30 -5:30 M-F.
