ETSU Abstract Algebra Club, Fall 2016 Activities

The ETSU Abstract Algebra Club held a meeting on Friday, Otober 14, 2016. About 17 members attended, including 3 faculty members.

Pizza was purchased with club funds (resulting from the sell of t-shirts during academic 2015-16) from the Italian Pizza Pub. Softdrinks and Halloween candy was available.

Dr. R.B. Beeler gave a presentation "Group Theory and the Rubik's Cube," which illustrated an application of group theory to the permutations of Rubik's cube. The slides of his presentation are online: PDF.

Additional business included a discussion of possible designs for the third t-shirt. Three designs were discussed:

A geometric representation of the dihedral group, D3.

The Klein-4 group as action on light switches.

A melting Rubik's Cube, from Fair Game.
