Keynote Address: Dr. Jay Wilkins, Prof. Math Ed. at V.P.I.&S.U. "Why Children Should Be Quantitatively Literate"
The following breakout sessions will be presented at the 2004 SVCTM conference. Participants will attend one session. Indicate on the Pre-Registration form 1st and 2nd preferences.

A. "Swimming Through Mathematics" Grades K-3.
Presenters: Tiffany Lee and Pearl Wells. Tiffany and Pearl are swimming through the exciting world of mathematics under the sea. Join us in under the sea explorations for fun, ocean-themed hands-on mathematics activities.''

B. "Early Morning Math" Grades K-3.
Presenters: Nancy Bolling and Paul Clark. Join Nancy and Paul as they demonstrate how to perk up your students' morning with a mathematics morning board theme that targets daily SOL's.

C. "Creative Ways to Teach Patterns, Functions & Algebra" Grades 4-8.
Presenters: Penni Mullins and Heather Varner. Do you think it is hard to make patterns, functions, and algebra concepts interesting and fun to teach? Come and join the fun with Penni and Heather and learn some new and exciting ideas to take back to your classroom!

D. "Bring a Piece of Yourself to Class" Grades 4-8.
Presenter: Karen Brown. As teachers we all bring a piece of ourselves to our classrooms. Come and see what you might find hiding in Karen's classroom!

E. "Writing in the Mathematics Classroom" Grades 3-8.
Presenter: Hope Hart. Techniques for using writing in the mathematics classroom to reinforce basic skills of both writing and mathematics and to encourage the skills of reasoning and analysis.

F. "Getting Results: Overcoming the Barriers to Test Success" Grades 8-12.
Presenter: Kathy Lowdermilk. This workshop will focus on effective test taking strategies. Six different strategies will be presented to help students become more successful on SOL tests. These strategies can be applied to any subject area or grade level.

G. "Let's Make a Deal!" Grades 8-16.
Presenter: Chris Allgyer. Bring your TI-83/84 as we explore ways to use simulations to answer probability questions. In particular, we will play a version of the classic TV game show "Let's Make a Deal" to explore the controversial probability problem that was made famous in the "Ask Marilyn" column of Parade Magazine.

The Southwest Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics will be meeting on Saturday, September 11, 2004 at the Higher Education Center, located on the campus of Virginia Highlands Community Collage in Abingdon, Virginia. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. in the Main Lobby with the General Session following at 9:00 a.m. and the breakout sessions beginning at 11:00 a.m.
The presenters for this meeting will be teachers and faculty from within the schools served by SVCTM. Teachers will participate in several hands-on activities that align with NCTM Standards and the Virginia SOL's. Workshops will be offered for each grade band.
I am enclosing a flyer, a pre-registration form, and a brief description of the workshops being offered. [This is the information above.] Please copy and distribute this information to the principals in each school in your system, asking the principals to encourage appropriate faculty members in their respective schools to attend the conference.
