INTRODUCTION

The Three Stooges are icons of American entertainment! As a group, they have been featured in vaudeville, "shorts," movies, cartoons, and even comic books. Over the 50 or so years the Stooges were in show business, the group of three consisted of a total of six Stooges: Moe Howard, Larry Fine, and a third Stooge.

They are best known for the 190 "shorts" they made with Columbia Pictures. These "shorts" or "two reelers" were usually between 15 and 20 minutes long. We will discuss a use of data gathered from these shorts to motivate introductory statistics students with a funny topic from popular culture.

The Stooges brand of humor, admittedly rather juvenile, is largely based on the Stooge-leader Moe beating down his colleagues.

The third short made with Columbia Pictures, Men in Black, was awarded for an Academy Award in 1934. The Stooges were the first to lampoon Adolph Hitler in the 1940 You Nazty Spy.
