Multivariable Calculus Online

What's Next

We do not intend to make any changes to the text in its present location, but we do intend to upgrade and adapt the text to new technologies and new practices.  Foremost among those is to produce a MathML version of the text, which will be accessed through an existing link on the present course homepage.

Secondly, we foresee a number of changes to the tools and the dynamic figures, both in quality and in quantity.  These changes will be reflected in the MathML version and will be most noticeable in the tools subsections themselves.  In particular, we believe there needs to be better integration of the tools with the exercises, as well as better ways of assessing a student’s usage of the tools.

We also plan to incorporate many of the anticipated suggestions that will be offered by those who use the online text.  We realize that Multivariable Calculus Online has never been formally reviewed, so the process of reviewing and refining will have to be an ongoing one.  Thus, the MathML version should be not only more aesthetic, but should also be more refined than the current version.

Finally, we anticipate that as the online text becomes more widely used, we will incorporate an archive of tools and worksheets.  We want the text to provide a variety of technological options to instructors, just as they now have a variety of applications in a traditional textbook from which they can choose student assignments.

That is, we believe that continuous improvement is warranted even though Multivariable Calculus Online has been well-received by our students.  As educators, we believe that we should be ever vigilant in identifying not only how best to present the material, but also how best to convey the excitement and enjoyment of mathematics and its applications to each new generation of students.
