Genetic Code and Protein Synthesis:

Genetic Code:

o      The genetic code determines the relationship between the three-nucleotide codon on the m RNA and the insertion of the correct amino acid into a protein during Protein Synthesis

o      The code consists of 64 combinations of nucleotides

o      In the code, there are three “stop codons

o       The code is considered “degenerative” since for many amino acids there are more than one codon

o       The code is used by the transfer RNA to ensure the correct amino acid is inserted during Protein Synthesis

Protein Synthesis:

o     The ribosome is the site of protein synthesis

o     Protein synthesis occurs basically the same way in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells; the components of the ribosome differ slightly

o     The step of protein synthesis that ensures that correct proteins are made is the addition of the amino acid to the transfer RNA; called Charging
