Spring 2020

Welcome to the East Tennessee State Astronomy II web site for Spring 2020!

Always check both this web page and the D2L course page, in case of difficulties in updating one or the other of them. If you are unsure of the status of the course at any time, send me an email at smithbj@etsu.edu.

I have posted a set of 11 mini-lectures covering the material before the next quiz. This includes the material in Chapter 23 and Sections 24.1, 25.1, and 25.3. This material covers the Milky Way, the structure of other galaxies, and galaxy interactions. Be sure to view these videos before Quiz #4, which will be given on Tuesday March 31. There are two ways to reach these lectures. One option is to go to the D2L web site at https://elearn.etsu.edu, hit `Content', and scroll down to find them. Alternatively, you can find them by clicking on the `outline' link below. Some computers have difficulty displaying the videos through D2L; if you get an error message through D2L, try the direct links via the `outline' web page below. If you have problems displaying the videos, it could be because the `zoom' web site, where the videos are stored, is overloaded. Wait a few minutes and try again. If it still doesn't work, let me know and I will try to post the videos elsewhere for you to access.

The eight lectures at the end of the Outline section are for Quiz 5; that material will not be on Quiz 4.

A study guide for Quiz 4 is available now.
Practice problems are also now available for Quiz 4.
Remember Quiz 4 is scheduled for Tuesday March 31.

Note that D2L and the `outline' web page also include an introductory video for the on-line version of the course. If you haven't already, look at that first to get an idea of what to expect for the next few weeks.

NOTE: the next quiz, Quiz 4, will be given on Tuesday March 31. It will be given through D2L. Please reserve time on Tuesday March 24 to do the quiz, and plan on spending some time in advance studying for it. I will be providing more information about the quiz, including a study guide and practice problems, at a later date.

The next lab for Astronomy II is Lab 18: Classification of Galaxies. This involves looking at some web pages, doing some drawings, and answering some questions. Write the answers in the lab manual and do the drawings in your lab manual, and either scan or photograph your pages, and then put them in the D2L drop box. To find the dropbox, click on "A to Z" in the main D2L web site for the course. This lab is due Friday March 27, but I encourage you to do it early if possible. Your filename(s) should include your name, i.e., Ken_Jones_Lab18.pdf

The next lab after that will be Lab 19: Galaxy Zoo. See the https://elearn.etsu.edu web page for more information about that. The Galaxy Zoo lab will be due Friday April 3, but I encourage you to do it well in advance if possible.
