Eating Styles / Nutrition Consciousness —Week 2

 

Lesson Overview:

Students expose to the knowledge of nutrition, explore eating styles, and establish the preference for healthy foods and eating styles.

 

Lesson Objectives:

To increase students’ awareness of the nutritional components in foods, encourage students to discover healthier ways of eating, and begin challenge activities for health promotion.

 

Lesson Activities: 

  1. Introduce food pyramid and nutrition fact labels.
  2. With facilitator-supplied foods, students will experience Challenge 1, involving tasting of raw fruits, vegetables, and whole grain products
  3. Journal Entries and discussion – Food opinions (most/least favorite, any new foods tasted, etc.), set open mind /preference for different foods and promote positive attitude toward healthy eating.

 

Lesson Plan:

A.  Food pyramid and nutrition fact labels                                       10 minutes

B.   Food tasting                                                                             30 minutes

C.  Journaling and discussion                                                           15 minutes      

                                                                                                       55 minutes

 

Food tasting

Stations for each food type shall be established in the classroom. Students shall then rotate through the stations, making relevant notes on supplied response sheets.

 

 

 Challenge 1

 

            Try as many raw fruits, vegetables, and whole grains as you can. Write up a taste analysis; rate the snacks for crunchiness, tastiness, sweetness, saltiness, color, portability, and vitamin content.
