Robert "Young Bob" Price
Celebrates Another Year as
Chair of the
Department of Mathematics and Statistics!

On July 1, 2013, Dr. Robert "Young Bob" Price was commemorated by appreciative faculty and students on this his second anniversary of stepping into the position of chair of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. The date coincided with the 50th anniversary of East Tennessee State College being renamed East Tennessee State University, and this was also cause for celebration. A photo cake was available for those attending this momentous occasion!

The celebration was heavily attended by graduate students taking "Introduction to Functional Analysis" (MATH 5740) during summer 2013.

An image of the famous "bulleted memo" (dated November 10, 2010) was part of the cake. This is the memo with which Dr. Price won the hearts and minds of the department members with his potential as a department chair.

East Tennessee State University Turns 50

On July 1, 1963, East Tennessee State College became East Tennessee State University. This is explained in East Tennessee State University by Don Good, Arcadia Publishing (2010), which is available in part from Google Books (last accessed July 21, 2013). The following photograph appears on page 77 of this book.

The caption of the photo reads: "College to University. Gov. Frank Clement signed the bill on March 5, 1963, that officially renamed East Tennessee State College as East Tennessee State University, effective as of July 1, 1963. Those in attendance included Mrs. Herman Robinson, Nell Dossett, Carl A. Jones (publisher of the Johnson City-Press-Chronicle), Sen. Herman Robinson, and President Dossett. The expansion of institutional programs had been constant for the previous decade. In 1956, the college's academic programs had been restructured more along the lines of traditional universities, as departments were organized into schools according to their academic areas. The schools at that time were arts and sciences, education, business administration and economics, and graduate studies, which had existed since 1950. In the early 1960s, the School of Health had been established in response to the institution's growing health program. Degree offerings had expanded to include the bachelor of arts, bachelor of science, bachelor of science in nursing education, bachelor of science in medical technology, and master of arts."

So far, Bob Price has been chair of this department for 2% this school's history, and for 4% of the history of ETSU. The department and university looks forward to many, many more years of Bob Price's leadership!
