In the late nineteenth century, the field of mathematics was rebuilt on a foundation of set theory, thus initiating a second golden age of science.

In the late twentieth century, mathematics educators made great inroads into how mathematics is learned and how it should be taught. 

Unfortunately, few calculus textbooks reflect both the mathematics and the mathematics education of the past 100 years.
