MEDA 5000 History and Philosophy of Librarianship

  • A web-based introduction to library science theory and practice. The course examines the social, cultural, historical, and political ramifications related to library infrastructure/services and to the invention, adoption, and diffusion of information and technology. The impact of technology on information and the ethical treatment of information in a technologically enhanced learning environment are examined.

MEDA 5400 Technology in Teaching and Learning

  • Foundations of instructional technology appropriate to educational applications, including computers, other related media, and instructional design. Stresses knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to implement and manage technology in educational environments. Hands-on experience is provided through the course laboratory. Students plan, implement, and evaluate educational technology for use in education.

CUAI 5591 Residency II MAT Semester

  • Provides graduate teacher candidates in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction with support for completing the edTPA, a nationally normed performance-based assessment that is the Residency capstone. Candidates apply their skills and planning, instructing, and assessing and reflect on their learning throughout the process. This course may be repeated up to four credits.

MEDA 5628 Children's Materials

  • This course deals with the analysis, evaluation, and use of library media for children. It strives to relate these media to the needs and interests of children as well as to the school curriculum.

MEDA 5635 Reference Materials

  • Examines reference sources pertinent to school librarianship as well as the evaluation and use of such sources in instructional efforts.

MEDA 5637 Young Adult Materials

  • This course will survey a wide variety of young adult literature in many formats. Students will preview materials for educational, informational, and literary use by young adults. Course will also cover literary genres, award-winning literature, popular authors, critical selection and analysis, and knowledge of age-level developmental stages. Emphasis will be the application in the school library media setting.

MEDA 5640 Multicultural Materials for Children and Young Adults

  • An introduction to the area of cross-cultural literature through the examination of cultural pluralism and prejudice as manifested in literature and media for youth. This course will survey a wide variety of children and young adult literature in many formats. Criteria for the evaluation of multicultural content and ways to introduce multicultural media into library programs will be explored.

MEDA 5641 Seminar in Multicultural Materials

  • Examines the need for and use of multicultural materials in school library collections and programming. Topics may include the evaluation and analysis of children’s and young adult materials based in diverse cultures, ethnicities, belief systems, and orientations.

MEDA 5700 Instructional Design in Librarianship and Education

  • Introduces skills of teaching as they relate to school library and educational settings. Students will learn how to design, develop, and evaluate an appropriate unit of instruction; develop and conduct a needs assessment; identify learning objectives; analyze learner characteristics; employ instructional strategies; and conduct evaluations.

MEDA 5710 School Librarianship Collection Development and Program Management

  • Emphasizes the collection development role of the school library as the central hub of instructional support and integration. Considers programming needs of school libraries, to include service offerings, professional responsibilities, systematic program planning and evaluation, collaborative delivery of instruction, and management of the following operations: facility management, budget, personnel, materials, and equipment. 

MEDA 5715 Instructional Role of the School Librarian

  • Examines the instructional role of the school librarian as mandated by the American Association of School Librarians via professional learning standards. Topics include library literacies, information literacy, 21st century skills (creative and critical thinking), collaboration, and the ethical use of information.

MEDA 5720 Cataloging and Classification

  • Provides an overview of current cataloging and classification practices, as well as subject-heading determinations. Cataloging and processing of materials produced in all formats using integrated library system software. Emphasis will be on the organization of information in a school library setting.

MEDA 5926 School Librarianship Practicum I

  • Part I of the culminating course for the program of study in the M.Ed. in School Librarianship Masters’ and professional certificate programs. Practicum I involves 100 hours of student participation in a professional field work setting under the supervision of a designated on-site school library supervisor and the University Instructor.

MEDA 5929 School Librarianship Practicum II

  • Part II of the culminating course in the program of study for M.Ed. in School Librarianship Masters’ and professional certificate programs. Practicum II involves 100 hours of student participation in a professional field work setting under the supervision of a designated on-site school library supervisor and the course instructor as well as the completion of a Portfolio and an Oral Capstone.

MEDA 5950 Research in Librarianship and Education

  • Introduces the research process, including problem identification, hypothesis testing, data collection, analysis and interpretation of results. Emphasis on research methods and on critical evaluation of reported research in the fields of school  librarianship  and education.
