Middle School Teacher Workshop

Hugh A. Miller III, Ph. D.

15-16 June 2004

Workshop Concepts to be covered:

ˇ       Cell structure- emphasis on difference between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells

ˇ       The types of DNA found in the cell- genomic vs organelles

ˇ       DNA structure and function

ˇ       Genetic code and protein structure

ˇ       DNA mutations and their effects

ˇ       Biotechnology

Standards from the Tennessee Science Curriculum Standards:

ˇ       Content Standard: 1. 0 Cell Structure and Function (7th grade)

o       7.1.spi.1 recognize basic structures that most cells share (i.e., nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, cell wall, ribosome, mitochondria, chloroplast, vacuole, lysosome).

o       7.1.spi.2 identify major cell organelles and their functions.

ˇ       Content Standard: 4.0 Heredity and Reproduction (8th grade)

ˇ       Standard Number: 4.0 Genetics and Biotechnology (9th grade)

o     8.4.spi.5 select models or illustrations that are representations of DNA.

o     8.4.spi.6 associate a change in a DNA molecule with a mutation.

o     4.1 investigate the structure and molecular composition of DNA and RNA.

o     4.6 investigate the causes and effects of mutations.
