The Assignment
This writing assignment is designed to provide a culminating
experience for the course--that is, this assignment will help you sum up what you've
learned this semester about teaching writing.
At the same time, the assignment is flexible, to allow for the
needs of different students in this class. You will choose one of two main options
for the assignment:
A.) Some students in this
class expect to teach a specific writing course in the near future. For example, some English grad students plan to
teach 1010 here at ETSU, this fall. If you
expect to be teaching a particular course soon, you will, for this assignment, develop
and write up a plan for that course, including a syllabus, policies, assignments,
calendar, etc. You will also write a memo
of introduction, addressed to me (instructor of this course) and to your classmates.
The memo will introduce your materials, explain
the course, and say a word or two about your pedagogy.
B.) Some students in this
class expect to teach at some point in the future, but do not yet have the need
to prepare materials for a specific course, any time soon. If you are one of those students, you will take
a broader approach to this assignment. You
will write an essay, addressed to fellow, prospective teachers, which presents,
in an interesting way, what you've learned about teaching writing this semester.
The essay will probably be around 1,500 to
2,000 words, plus a list of citations and resources.
