My students in
English 4017/5017: Children's Literature and I just returned
from Abingdon, Virginia, where we saw the Barter Players'
theatrical performance of Catherine Bush's adaptation of the
Grimm's classic fairy tale
Rapunzel. After the show, we held a "wunch" (working lunch)
right there at Barter Stage II to compare the literary version
to the stage adaptation and to analyze the literary and cultural
differences and similarities we recognized across the three
texts, time periods, and cultural locations represented in the
Grimms' classic fairy tale, Shannon Hale's revisionary graphic
novel
Rapunzel's Revenge,
and Catherine Bush's adaptation for stage.
