September 12, 2018 : Effect of deutrium "snow" on ultracold neutron sources

A collaboration including, PSI, NCSU, LANL, ETH Zurich, and the University of Mainz has investigated the degradation of solid deuterium crystals and its effect on the production of ultracold neutrons. Their results show a consistent trend between the LANL and PSI sources, the SD2 converter crystal is damaged by pulses of the proton accelerator. This damaged leads to an attenuation of the lower energy UCN. See A. Anghel, et al, Eur. Phys. J. A (2018)54 : 148 (arXiv:1804.08616) for the details.
