Headshot of Dr. Steadman

Jason Steadman, Psy.D., Lab director

Dr. Jason Steadman is Assistant Professor of Psychology at ETSU and director of the CAPTVRE/CHIPC lab. He graduated in 2007 with a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Evansville, in Evansville, IN. He then graduated with his Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) in 2014 from Baylor University, in Waco, TX. While at Baylor, Dr. Steadman specialized in play therapy, trauma, and anxiety disorders in children and youth, studying under Dr. Helen Benedict, a nationally recognized scholar in the field of play therapy, particularly with children who suffer from complex trauma and attachment-related disorders. Dr. Steadman completed his predoctoral clinical internship at The Village for Families & Children in Hartford, CT, where he continued to work closely with children ages 3 to 19 suffering from a wide range of mental illnesses. There, he also received specialized training in trauma-focused cognitive-behavior therapy (TF-CBT), Child-Parent Psychotherapy (CPP), and other evidence-based treatments for childhood psychiatric disorders. As part of his work at The Village, Dr. Steadman also developed a screening tool for improving the ability of clinicians to identify the most appropriate trauma-informed treatment for children that present to the center, with guidelines for assisting clinicians to choose between TF-CBT; CPP; Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR); Modular Approach to the Treatment of Childhood Anxiety, Trauma, Depression, and Conduct Disorder (MATCH-ATDC); IICAPS; ChildFirst; and Multidimensional Family  Therapy (MDFT). Following internship, Dr. Steadman completed a postdoctoral fellowship in community health and integrated primary care at Community Health Center, Inc. (CHCI), based in Middletown Connecticut. CHCI is the largest community health center organization in Connecticut, with 13 different health centers and many more school-based health centers throughout every part of the state. CHCI's mission statement reads "Healthcare is a right, not a privilege," and this reflects CHCI's goal of providing healthcare to everyone, particular underserved, underinsured, and uninsured communities. While at CHCI, Dr. Steadman worked as a behavioral health clinician at health centers in New London and Clinton, CT and also at a school-based health center at Middletown High School, in Middletown, CT. Dr. Steadman joined the faculty of ETSU in August 2015, and is looking forward to spending a long career teaching, researching, and providing clinical care to underserved populations in Eastern TN and surrounding areas.

In his free time, Dr. Steadman enjoys spending time with his family, writing and playing music, hiking/being outdoors, and, he's not ashamed to admit, playing videogames and watching TV. You can find Dr. Steadman's music online through iTunes, Spotify, Amazon, X-Box music, iHeart Radio, and other digital online sources. You can also follow Dr. Steadman on Twitter @jasonsteadmanpsyd.
