Daryl Stephens' Conference Handouts
These are handouts from conference
presentations I have made. I have not included all my presentations, just the
ones with the best handouts.
TNADE (Tennessee Association for Developmental Education)
- Using
Demographic Data to Predict Students’ Achievement in DSPM Courses (TNADE
2005, Chattanooga)
- Teaching
Mathematics Using History and Fairy Tales (TNADE 2004, Memphis -- presented
with Robert Davidson)
- Effects
of Losing 0700 Courses on Passing Rates (TNADE 2003, Chattanooga) -- PDF
file, 8 pages, 140 KB).
- Summary:
ETSU dropped 0700 courses a year before TBR required us to. This report
summarizes what happened and how the students who should have placed in
an 0700 course (math, reading, writing) did when "holistically placed" into
0800 classes instead.
NADE (National Association for Developmental Education)
- Redefining
Developmental Math for Non-Algebra Core Courses (NADE
2008, Boston -- presented with Murray Butler)
- Can Demographic
Data Predict Student Achievement? (NADE 2006, Philadelphia) -- see
"Using Demographic Data to Predict
Students’ Achievement in DSPM Courses" in the TNADE section
above.
- Teaching Mathematics Using History and Fairy Tales
(NADE 2005, Albuquerque -- presented with Robert Davidson)
- Don't Try This: What Doesn't Work in Developmental Math (NADE 2004, St.
Louis, presented with Irene Duranczyk)
- Adapting Developmental Course Content to Align
with Changing Realities (NADE 2003, Austin, presented with a
panel of faculty from ETSU and the University of Memphis. This PDF handout
(79 KB) reflects only my portion of the presentation. A similar presentation
(with less data available) was also given at TNADE in 2002.
- Abstract:
Declining revenues prompted the state of Tennessee to eliminate the lowest-level
remedial courses at state universities. At East Tennessee State University,
students needing these courses were placed in the next higher level of developmental
courses. These students tended to do about the same in the reading and writing
courses as those who did not need the
remedial courses, but considerably poorer in mathematics courses.
- Statistics Activities for
Developmental Math , presented
at NADE 1999. (PDF, 10 pages, 170 KB)
- Includes
several activities such as creating a scatterplot and visually finding the
equation of the apparently best-fitting line, stem-and-leaf plots, circle
graphs with M&Ms, reaction times. Includes directions for making bar
and circle graphs using Quattro Pro 6/7 and several linear data sets.
- Graph paper with lines 5 mm apart (PDF file)
- Putting Practice Tests
on the Web using Word Perfect's Internet Publisher (an older handout --
1996?) (19 KB, HTML format)
TMATYC (Tennessee Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges)
-
Redefining Developmental Math for Non-Algebra Core Courses (TMATYC
2008, Northeast State TCC, Blountville -- presented with Murray Butler) |

Teachers Association) September 21-22, 2007; UETCTM April 15, 2008; Washington
County inservice May 8, 2008; SVCTM September 13, 2008. (PDF; 136 KB). This

high school in mental math contests (UIL Number Sense) in Texas .
