I - Course Description, Credit Hours, and Prerequisites

ENTC 2170 Computer Aided Design & Drafting (4 credits). Fundamentals of engineering drawing & sketching: orthographic projections, dimensioning, tolerancing, and scaling; Introduction to the CAD interface and environment; 2D drawing basics; using object snaps, layers, blocks;  dimensioning; Introduction to 3D modeling; extrusions, revolves, & rendering. Lecture and lab.


II - Course Objectives

The purpose of this class is to introduce students to the myriad facets of engineering drawing & sketching as well as 2D and 3D CAD applications. Upon the successful completion of the course, the student will have developed and demonstrated basic understandings of:
• the purpose of engineering drawing and sketching
• creating orthogonal and section views;
• dimensioning and tolerances
• using 2D & 3D CAD software applications, interfaces, and drawing production environments;
• using of fundamental AutoCAD features including points, object snaps, layers, symbols (blocks), etc.;
• producing dimensionally accurate 2D mechanical "shop" drawings of a mechanical assembly and its related components;
• producing at least one mechanical drawing of high enough quality to be used in a portfolio;
• exporting and importing geometric information for transfer of CAD data from one application to another; and
• creating very basic 3D CAD models (Rhino 3D).

Note: Course outcomes are in alignment with ABET Criterion 2 a. (appropriate mastery of the knowledge, techniques, skills, and modern tools of the discipline); d. (an ability to apply creativity in the design of systems, components, or appropriate to program objectives); f. (an ability to identify, analyze, and solve technical problems; and g. (an ability to communicate effectively). Additionally, aspects of ABET Criterion 2 b. (an ability to apply current knowledge [of] …. engineering and technology); i (an ability to understand professional, ethical, and social responsibility); h (a recognition of the need for and an ability to engage in lifelong learning); and k. (a commitment to quality, timeliness, and continuous improvement) are impacted.


III - Texts and Materials

NO TEXT REQUIRED

Required Materials:  
• USB flash drive or other portable memory
• set of drawing tools including a protractor, a compass &/or divider, a 30°-60°-90° triangle 6" (minimum),
a 45° triangle 6" (minimum), a 12" triangular Engineer's scale, a 12" triangular Architectural scale, and a pad of 8-1/2" x 11' graph paper with 1/5" or 1/10" grid (the green or beige, reverse print "Engineer's Pad" is an excellent choice).

• AutoDesk AutoCAD  (any edition of AutoCAD software released from 2004 to present)

• Rhinoceros 3D  (Any version available)

IV - Attendance Policy

Attendance may be taken at any time during each class meeting. Your presence and participation are important.  In-class design/programming assignments will not necessarily be announced prior to those class meeting(s).  All major exams and term project assignments will be announced at least five calendar days prior to the test/due date.

Students are responsible for the material covered in
all class sessions as well as all assignments.


V - Evaluation and Grading

Grading is based on your performance as revealed in your in-class laboratories, homework assignments, project presentation and report, the midterm exam, and the final exam.

B = 83
B- = 80
C+ = 77
C = 73
C- = 70
D+ = 67
D = 60

Homework & Assignments:

A test, exercise, or paper may be given (or submitted) early for a University sponsored absence (please provide suitable notice, if possible). Make-up tests may be given at the discretion of the instructor and only if a student presents suitable documentation (evidence) explaining the (emergency) absence to the instructor.

Quizzes and exams may include any material covered in the lectures, assigned readings, videos, classroom discussions or exercises.
