About Writing Groups

No doubt by now you are feeling a bit overwhelmed by, or maybe even lagging in confidence toward your writing. Take heart – you are not alone! In addition to the tips offered on this site and others, participating in a writing group can significantly boost your writing skills, enjoyment, and motivation.

A writing group is simply a planned group of two or more people that meets to discuss its current writing projects, provide members with feedback and suggestions to improve writing, and help each other overcome hurdles in the writing process. A writing group can serve any purpose its members choose and can focus on any type of writing: there are writing groups for poets as well as doctoral candidates. The important thing is that members benefit in some way from the writing group.

The Writing Center at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill provides excellent electronic handouts about forming writing groups, interacting with group members, and developing effective goals for the group. Please click below to follow the link to the UNC writing group page.
